Sorel is the fourth oldest city in Canada. It is situated on the St-Lawrence river at the mouth of the Richelieu river on the former site of Fort Richelieu, built in 1642, and the seigneury given in 1672 to Pierre de Saurel.
Fort Richelieu was a key site during the American revolution and its liberation was one of the turning points leading to the end of the Anglo-American war in October 1777.
